"Terry"

My career has been mainly spent editing TV and Cinema commercials for some of the top production companies and directors in London and around the world. During that time I have cut approximately 4000 – 5000 commercials, many of which have been at the top level

After leaving school I went straight into the film industry as a second assistant editor at a production company. My first job as an editor was in 1974 at London Postproductions, which at the time was one of the biggest editing companies in Great Britain and a forerunner of what postproduction companies are today.

I left there at the end of 1977 and started my own company, employing several people. Based in Soho, London, which was the hub of the U.K. advertising industry during its ‘Golden Years’. I have edited for some of the top names in the industry, winning many awards both here and worldwide. These include the first ever ‘Craft Award’ presented at the London Advertising Awards Festival and the Editing award at the Cannes Film Festival that same year. I have been fortunate enough to have been the recipient of many Golden Lion awards in Cannes and Venice, Golden Arrows at the London Festival, not to mention the silver and bronze etc. D & AD ‘pencils’, Clio’s and Grand Awards from the New York Film Festival plus numerous prizes from Japan, Canada and Europe.

Apart from commercials, I have edited feature films, music videos and many TV programmes and documentaries. One of these was called ‘For Iris’. This was part of the ‘First Edition’ programme series for Carlton Television and this won a Gold award at the Documentary Film Festival in Houston U.S.A.

I edited the music video for the classic Dire Straits album called ‘Making Movies’ which was number one in the video charts for several months.

My recent work has included a charity film for Christian Aid in Rwanda, ‘The New York City Ballet Workout’ and ‘Living a Ballet Dream’ for Mattel Inc. as well as numerous T.V. and cinema commercials such as Smirnoff Vodka, Flora Pro.Activ and Shell for the U.K., Europe and The Middle East.

Due to the huge success of ‘The New York City Ballet Workout’, another workout video was commissioned which also proved to be very popular. At the same time I edited some T.V. commercials for The New York City Ballet’s winter and spring seasons at the Lincoln Centre, New York.

In the summer of 2003 The New York City Ballet visited St. Petersburg in Russia to take part in the city's 300th anniversary. A documentary was made of their trip and I edited this during the autumn for theatrical and television release.

My main sources of inspiration include directors such as Martin Scorsese, David Lean, Billy Wilder, Powell and Pressburger, Orson Welles and Francis Ford Coppola. These, I believe are people of vision and tremendous technical ability, possessing a passion and belief in their work that really has pushed the boundaries of cinema excellence, often against popular opinion and the studio bosses of the time.
I am a great admirer of the American editor Thelma Schoonmaker who won well-deserved Oscars for the films ‘Raging Bull’, 'The Aviator' and 'The Departed'.
